5k with BATC

We ran a 5k as a team to represent the BATC Fire and Rescue Services Program. It was a lot of fun. Two of us ran it with air packs on and breathing through SCBAs. Sort of like breathing through a straw when you really get worked up.

L to R: Raschelle Johnson(student), Ryan Ottley(student), Jeremy Robertson(Asst. Director), Heath Banbury(instructor), Adam Christensen(past student), Bryan Davies(Director), Little Davies, (daughter).

away we go

Been For Dam Ever I know...again

i recently took my Utah Hunter Safety class and here is how it went. 25 or so people with a few girls 20 or so 12 year old boys and a 31 year old me. It was funny. The little guys were way into it. They knew all the animal species which i had no clue of and were fun to watch shoot. Some of them looked 8. On the shooting test you had to shoot a .22 30 times and get 15 0f 30 inside the kill zone on a paper rabbit. Each kid was sweating as the intructor added their scores...13...14...15...16, then i sigh of relief. I on the other hand went 30 for 30...no big deal, ha ha.

so i am now official. my first hunt set was to be "DUCKS"...ive been told they dont taste very good and i say ill be the judge of that. My rules for hunting is that everything i shoot will be eaten and i am not interested in being a trophy hunter. So you will n

ot see me out there looking for the big buck or elk. next year ill go for a cow elk or something. its all about the meat and experience for me.

so as of now ive been out duck hunting twice and only halve one kill to show for it. its hard to judge how far is too far to shoot with a shotgun. i love it though. i catch myself staring at the scenery too much but thats part of it for me. i havnt eaten the duck yet. my buddy Cody likes to age them a little then cook them so we should be having duck dinner here soon.

dogs and cats

Thought id share with you a call we went on at 2 am the other day. The following are the actual dispatch notes we received on the radio...just picture 5 grown men laughing their asses off as we get the details...

COMPLAINANT IS RESIDENT... SHES WORRIED SICK ... COMPLAINANTS KITTY WAS CHASED INTO A TREE BY THE NEIGHBORS FEROCIOUS DOG....COMPLAINANT IS UNABLE TO CLIMB TREE... COMPLAINANT IS UNSURE IF KITTY WILL BE SEEN AGAIN IF FIRE DEPARTMENT DOESNT HELP..UNK WHERE DOG IS NOW... COMP IS FRANTIC BECAUSE CATS LIFE IS ON THE LINE

So we arrive to sure enough a "frantic" (more like tweakin) lady flagging us down like it was a matter of life and death. Come to find out this ferocious dog is really a cuddly yellow lab who just wants the dam cat out of his tree. To make a long story short..the cat was successfully rescued by the low guy on the totem pole, "me". We still die laughing at that call. Worth waking up for? Maybe not but still funny.

Now for the dog story...so im training for The Top of Utah Marathon and was running along teh route about 8 miles into my run when i see a dog running towards we. Alarmed, i jump a little then the lesh catches him and he stops. Phewww! im safe i think looking at this killer bear dog thing and then SNAP, the rope breaks and hes on me in a second. Those of you who know me know i have calves chiseled from marble, haha, jk, but seriously i think thats the only reason he didnt totally tear me up. I did get plenty of cuts but mostly deep bruises and welts. The old man finally got the dog to go away and i made him drive me back to my car. Couldnt walk strait for a few days, but it could've been worse. Also is you bitten by a dog and its an unfamiliar dog ABSOLUTELY CALL ANIMAL CONTROL AND IF THE BITE BREAKS THE SKIN GO TO ER OR INSTACARE. These things have to be reported and you need to CYA.

almost exactly the sixe dog that got me. jk. but look at that thing!

Itunes Autofill haha...

For my iPod shuffle i have the option of iTunes choosing at random all the songs that will fit and i decided to give it a go since i was pressed for time and wanted to get going. So it did its thing and i headed for my favorite running spot "Logan River Trail in Logan Canyon". I got going and the music was ok, my legs were feeling ok as well and then around 15 minutes into it i realized i was listening to Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" but in Spanish. It was actually pretty awesome. I realized how totally random this mix wold be mostly since half the music i had no idea i even had. The next shocker was the fact i was listening to Britney Spears "Toxic", ha ha, also there was a lot of Operation Ivy, Bouncing Souls, and Bad Religion. Those three bring back memories. Mostly of a chubby, jolly Mick Roberts. There was also a Modest Mouse song that had some sort of maraca in it that sent me jumping across the path cause i thought id encountered a rattle snake. I also remember some Neko Case, Neil Diamond, and Built to Spill. So that was the music part of the run...

The Run Run went like this...Ive been having my dam
shin pain lately again so early on i felt it but it wasn't so bad. I go to my 15 min stretch point and was actually doing pretty good. i went op optimistic abou the run and took off for the switch backs. I found a fork in the road that ive passed many a times and always going left. I
decided to go right and it was awesome. The views of Logan canyon were terrific. Some of the trail turned quite steep so there was some hiking involved but I added 30 minutes or so to my run by going that route. I then realized in doing that i was getting kind of dehydrated but since this was my first long run in a while that i felt this good i continued on and got a really pretty good 90 minute run in that i was very happy with despite the cotton mouth when i got back to the start.

Oh yeah and on July 4th I ran the Tooele Freedom 5k with my 10 year old niece and she did fantastic. Good Job Morgan!

GOOD IDEA...BAD IDEA...

BAD IDEA:

Im currently training for The Top of Utah Marathon in September and a few days ago i needed to get a 10 mile run in. I didnt have time in the morning for whatever reason so about 5pm i decided to get my but out and do it. It was around 85 degrees which of course isnt terribly warm but when its been in the 60s it proved a big jump. I decided id run some of the race route up Black Smith Fork Canyon. 5 mile up and turn around and come back down to where id parked. 10 minutes in i knew i was in trouble. Earlier that day i had done a Rip 60 workout week 5. If you aren't familiar with it its a suspension trainer program that is awesome. Needless to say doing both on the same day will not happen again. So my legs already felt like crap and i was already really hot. Not another minute went by and i saw my first of way too many rattle snakes on the road. This one being around 5 feet long about did me in. ive been working on my snake phobia lately so i brushed the encounter off and resumed. My run soon came to a run for a while then walk to get my HR back down. Oh did i mention my freaking HR wouldnt cooperate either? I was almost always 15-20 beats higher than normal. i was like...WTF? Then guess what happened?...snake number 2 came along, then 3, 4, 5, 6...until i lost count after 10 or so. I go to my stash of water and nutrition still somewhat optimistic about the return cause it would be mostly downhill. That was short lived cause now i had to pass every dam snake i had just encountered for a second time, and of course they were all out on the road waiting for me just sunbathing...little bastards! About 25 minutes after my intended arrival time i got back to my motorbike and my awaiting nalgene of much needed Endurox drink. i just started laughing at my self cause of my stupidity but also considered it a small victory for not giving up and finishing the intended mileage.

Probably wont see me up Blacksmith Fork running again till September though....

used it before but it just shows perfectly how horrible snakes are

Boy I Love My Motorbike

Logan to Durango all back roads. It took 2 days with the first being a marathon travel day and very few sights and stops and the second being all about being a tourist. Traveling through Western Colorado on a bike was incredible to say the least. The roads were great and the scenery outstanding. Theres a lot of small mining towns with a lot of history and things to see. My favorite town heading down to Durango was Ouray. It was a tiny postcard town and lots to see and do. I spent a few days in Durango seeing the sights taking little bike rides and of course saw old friends i havnt seen since i was a kid. i took a different route home and saw more incredible sights and scenery. There are so many waterfalls its crazy. I also saw a lot of wildlife. Lots of dear, a fox, elk, and a brown bear. By the time i was back to about Grand Junction however my butt was done with the bike and i really wanted to get home at a decent time so i plugged Logan into the GPS and took the boring interstates home to get home quicker. Not as much fun but 6 days on the bike i was ready to get home.

I love these trips. it was great on my own but definitely would have been better with someone. Hard thing is who else has the amount of time off of work that i do.

Near Lake City , CO. Awesome view of Mt Uncompahgre.
Definitely chilly up here and worth a photo.
Not even sure where this was there were so many views like this.
Kimmie Grover and I. At least 21 years since wed seen each other.
Near Vallecito Lake, CO. i love taking photos of my bike.
River Parade, Durango. I happened onto Animas River Days.
Durango-Silverton Railroad. Cool old steam engine to ride.
Silverton, CO. Cool old mining town although nothing going on when i passed through.
Stuck in traffic on The Million Dollar HWY. At least i was stuck in the shade of the tunnel.
Ouray, CO. I want to go back and spend more time here.

Black Canyon of The Gunnison
I love staying in these little cabins. No more hotels for me.
Near Flaming Gorge, UT. Wow i had no idea how fun a road this was.

Buddy Graduate Clip Art
Well its official. I am done with college. Whoopdee Do!, right? Well it took this guy 13 years to do it so after that much time its a huge relief finally. I started at USU fall of 1998 then went on a two year mission. After returning i screwed around a lot and changed my degree multiple times. Then i decided to go the firefighter route. After getting a full time job i finally went back to finish a little over 3 years later. Chippin away at it little by little i am now finished with a Liberal Art degree from USU with an emphasis in Health and Fitness.

Ive already been asked if im going to walk at graduation, and the answer is

HELL NO!

I hate graduations with a passion and never want to go through it again, let alone make anyone else go through another.

Phewww...I like not using my brain power near as much now a days!

Been For Dam Ever I know

So I have been a super huge slacker i know, well as far as blogging goes anyways. Heres a little of what ive been up to...

Rage Triathlon Lake Mead, NV

This past weekend a few friends from work and i w
ent down to Vegas to do an Olympic Tri. We got hooked up with a sweet house to stay in and the weather was awesome. We went from wet spring Utah 40s-50s to sunny 80s. It was awesome. The race went ok. It was definitely not an easy course however. I finished 4th in my division whi
ch i am pleased with. The winner of my division also won the entire race so i felt even better about that. The only bad things about the trip was the fact that my AC decided to not work and my friend who traveled with me got way too much sun and now shes a lobster. All in all though it was a great trip. Too short though.

Chillin by the pool after the race and had a sweet BBQ.
Dom Burchett 2h58m, Rob Ayres 3h2m, Heath 3h3m after race.

Dom and Rob getting ready for race.

Sushi Dinner Fundraiser...

Some friends of mine had the horrible misfortune of losing their newborn baby so our friends rallied to do what we could. Our plan was to have a sushi dinner. One of my buddies being a sushi chef prepared close to 1000 pieces of sushi and i made something like 3 gallons of miso. We ended up with over 40 people coming and were able to raise close to our goal to help our buddies out. It was a great turnout and i got to see a lot of my friends i hadn't seen in a while.

showdown with a BUCK

On Saturday i finally got home to Logan after driving to Provo after work in the morning to attend a wedding. I was super tired when i got home and headed right for a nap. When i woke up i still needed to get my workout in and since it was only a cool 35 degrees in stead of single digits like it had been i headed out for a jog. About 20 or so minutes into it i was running around Providence Cemetery when i was stopped in my tracks by a huge 4 point buck. I didn't even see it till i was like 20 feet away. After checking my pants for chocolate pudding i realized i was in a staring contest with this buck. One i knew i was not going to win. i tried clapping, yelling, etc and the buck stood his ground. He didn't even flinch. All of a sudden internet videos ran through my head of people getting mauled by deer. I then decided that slowly retreating was the best option and kind of side stepped around the big guy. it wasn't till i was well away the he moved. The guy just went back to eating grass, probably thinking how cool he was for scaring the hell about of some runner. It wasn't 15 minutes later that i found my self in a similar circumstance, but this time it was 2 bucks and a doe. I couldn't believe it. Thank goodness they just shuffled off.

I got back to house after an hour of running and was pleased to see i had plenty of energy left so i grabbed the upstairs peoples dog and went for another 30 minutes or so. Sage the dog is a great running partner especially when you are tired cause he has to pee and poop on everything. So i was pretty happy that my legs felt so good. My fitness is coming back. i still haven't gotten in the pool yet and im kind of scared to.

Not a 4 point i know but at 20 feet it seemed this big
